Visual artist Marguerite Humeau approached us to assist with the Structural Engineering design of three large scale sculptural pieces to be exhibited at the 2022 Venice Art Biennale. The forms, inspired by ocean currents, spring from the ground, touching it extremely lightly and appearing to levitate. They therefore had to be designed for the considerable structural cantilevers and limiting deflection which could damage the brittle finishes. Working with the artist and the fabricator we designed a complex twisting internal steel frame to support the outer skin of bioplastic, foam and resin. Working to a very challenging timescale we successfully delivered the engineering design, proving the work could be stable in external environments with a catalogue of different base plate designs and specification of ballast Client: Marguerite Humeau
