PoliNations

Installed in Birmingham city centre during September, PoliNations was a spectacular city centre garden with giant architectural trees and thousands of plants that transformed Victoria Square into an urban oasis. It hosted free events, workshops and performances including live music, dance, spoken word and drag.

PoliNations was a celebration of colour, beauty, and of natural diversity. A place for everyone to explore, enjoy and be their true unique selves.

Format were a key part of the design team for the 5 sculptural trees from concept phase onward through to final detailing. Our work included creative assistamce, structural engineering and optimisation, development of a methodology to use repurposed steel in the trunks and connection detailing across all elements.

We also assisted on a range of other sculptural elements within the wider landscape.

The project was commissioned as part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK and presented as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival.
