Lion King Tent
Format provided concept, scheme and technical engineering design services for “The Lion King”, a musical immersive activation as part of “Disney: The Castle”, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The event was a collaborative effort between Balich Wonder Studio and Disney Concerts.
We developed the primary structure for the tent, the folding masts and associated structural tension cables. The lightweight tension structure is designed to be easy to assemble, disassemble and transport and to use the minimum material possible. The mast-and-cable system is then clad in non-structural fabric panels, some of which are designed to be removed in high wind conditions. To allow for quick design iterations we used our in-house developed K2 Engineering tools.
Significant coordination was required to reach a structural design that incorporated the needs of touring, assembly, fabrication, fabric-connections and audio-visual equipment support. We adapted the underlying structural model multiple times to capture all of these needs before working alongside Serious Stages on the development of their fabrication model.
