Lines of Flight

Format were invited by the production team at Amsterdam Berlin to do the structural engineering design of an installation for Milan Design Week 2024 as part of Porsche’s “Art of Dreams” series. Artists Numen/For Use were selected to design a large scale installation inspired by the iconic Pepita pattern and informed by the themes of geometry, symmetry, rhythm and repitition.

We worked alongside Numen and fabricators Prostoria to develop the visually-minimal steel framework that supports the Numen-designed netting landscape. The tight project timeline meant that our digital working methodologies and experience in connection detail design was critical to enable Prostoria to order material then commence fabrication within only a few weeks. We also produced detailed documentation for review and approval by the local checking process.

The resulting interactive communal sculpture was used first for a dance performance staged by choreographers Imre and Marne van Opstal which saw dancers inhabit all layers of the structure. Once open to the public the ground level nets were accessible for exploration and inhabitation by visitors to the event.
