Dundee Waterfront

Dundee Waterfront is the latest installation in a series of collaborations with artist Lee Simmons and follows the large scale public works Tay Whale and Haze in Dundee, Scotland.

Inspired by the tidal map of the Dundee area the work is a multi layered screen of thin stainless steel plate, eight metres tall, held together with strategically placed small diameter steel dowels. The multiple sheets were analysed as a single composite structure hung from with top and restrained at the bottom.

The outward simplicity of the piece belies the rigour of the engineering investigation and the work needed to refine the structure, and in particular the connections, in order to keep it within budget. We worked closely with fabricator Littlehampton Welding Ltd to ensure that the work was practical but did not compromise the artistic intent.
