Lattice composite structures
The projects shown on this page are outcomes of research performed by James within a three year research position at the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE) Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE) between 2015 and 2018 under the direction of Professor Jan Knippers.
At Format we’re interested in what’s next. Our projects use the most cutting edge computational tools available but we explore further than that in our research interests.
One of these is on how engineers can respond to the growing range of additive manufacturing processes being developed for use in the creation of the built environment. These new processes enable the manipulation of material at resolutions much finer than those possible with traditional building fabrication techniques.
James recently returned from three years of funded research at the ITKE, University of Stuttgart where he was a researcher within the Innochain Network working on the “Virtual Prototyping of FRP”. The research considered software tools and workflows for the design of lattice composite structures created through the process of Coreless Filament Winding.
During this work, the projects shown on this page were designed and manufactured in collaboration with colleagues from the ITKE and the Institute of Computational Design and Construction (ICD) (directed by Professor Achim Menges), the amazing ITECH Students and with FibR GmbH (a coreless winding fabricator run).
